What llms.txt is, and what it is not
llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of a site: a title, a short summary, and sections of links with a note for each. It gives an AI agent a curated map instead of making it guess from your navigation. The format comes from the llmstxt.org proposal.
It is a proposal, not a standard that search engines or AI providers have promised to read. Treat it as an agent-readiness file, not a ranking lever. To control which AI crawlers may fetch your pages at all, use the AI crawler robots.txt generator.
FAQ
- What is llms.txt?
- llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file at the root of a site that gives language models and AI agents a short, curated guide to the site: a title, a one-paragraph summary, and sections of links with notes. The proposal is published at llmstxt.org.
- Does llms.txt improve my rankings or AI citations?
- No one can promise that. llms.txt is a community proposal, not a standard that search engines or AI providers have committed to reading. It is most useful for AI agents and coding tools that fetch it when you point them at it, so treat it as an agent-readiness file rather than an SEO lever.
- What does the Optional section do?
- Under the llms.txt proposal, links in a section named Optional can be skipped when a tool needs a shorter context. Put secondary pages there and keep the main sections for what matters most.
- Does the tool fetch my sitemap?
- No. You paste the sitemap XML or the URLs yourself, and everything is processed in your browser. That keeps your pages private and avoids any outside request.
- Where do I put the generated file?
- Serve it at the root of your domain so it answers at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, next to robots.txt.
